lyrics

- Asai Ryōi, “Contos do Mundo Flutuante” (1661)

Ukiyo-e, or pictures of the floating world, is the name given to a style of woodblock prints produced in Japan which flourished between the 18th and 19th centuries.

There is a series of similarities between woodblock prints and musical media of artisanal production. The artist’s work undergoes a process that involves specialists of the medium and thus becomes accessible to a greater number of aficionados. By not having an original, only copies, more importance is placed on the access to a work itself than on the worth of a unique collectors piece.

In the case of music, its ethereal nature engenders the need for a physical format. An object that represents, reproduces and carries with it a graphic art, tied to the music in a subjective manner. One of these mediums, the cassette tape, is present in different ways in the musical history that inspires our catalogue. In the 1990s, it was the main medium used for the home recording of beats, created on samplers or other equipment. However, for an entire generation, it was also, for a certain time, the easiest way to copy and share songs or extracts of them. Cassettes are bound as much to the appropriation of another’s music as to the recording of one’s own homemade creations.

Of all the current media, we believe that cassettes are the ones which most favor the listening of a project as a whole and not merely isolated tracks. Moreover, there is no point in discussing sound quality when it comes to cassettes: its sound signature is desired and considered part of the music.

We believe that there is something special about artists who privilege in their own art creations that they themselves like, giving greater importance to this honesty than to the industry pressures of the market or demonstrations of virtuosity. It is with this mindset that we curate our catalog: with an emphasis on circular and contemplative compositions and sound collages, we release music that we like listening to. In this way, we aspire to reach in greater depth people who think and listen to music in a similar way as we do.

Our objective is to create a solid catalogue, making it as accessible as possible, and having its physical form in cassette tapes which will always include exclusive material.

Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maples, singing songs, drinking wine and diverting ourselves by just floating, floating; caring not a whit for the poverty staring us in the face, refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current: this is what we call the floating world.
–Asai Ryōi, “Tales of a Floating World” (1661)
